Oil paintings
For many years Buss made sure he had pictures in the Spring Exhibition at the Royal Academy--which was an artist's showcase for prospective clients. Like many other leading artists he also exhibited at the British Institution and the famous Suffolk Street Gallery. A number of his oils were so popular that they were engraved and printed for a wider audience. At present we only have a meagre selection of images of Buss' oils.

DESCRIPTION: Attributed to Robert William Buss
Indistinctly signed and dated '1987', lower right.
PROVENANCE: Property from the William F Reilly Collection. Due for auction by Christies in New York on January 26th, 2011.
NOTE: I am not totally convinced this is by Buss. In 1837 Buss seems not to have been into this kind of painting, rather he was into stage portraiture and larger satirical works for exhibition at the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street. He was also busy embarking on his work as a book illustrator. The lists of his works accumulated by the family in the 19th century do not mention "The Auction". However, I would love to be proved wrong!
