Buss did not generally paint watercolors for sale. He used this medium for preparatory sketches for oils or engravings; or simply as a record of places, events, costumes, studies of other artists, etc. These paintings were preserved by the family after his death, bound in a huge leather volume and finally presented to the North London Collegiate School (NLCS) for safe keeping in their archives.
The condition of many of the paintings is less than perfect, but apart from digitally removing the more obvious defects these beautiful sketches may now be viewed by the public for the first time ever. Many are untitled and I have sometimes taken the liberty of providing titles for the sake of reference. CLICK each image to see a larger, low resolution version.
Subject to permission all images are available as limited edition fine art gicleé prints and come with a certificate of authentication signed by Michael Buss, great- great- grandson of the artist.
