How many times did we only see the "Satisfactory" remark
against a subject?
Or worse, "Poor!"

Letter of commendation from
Headmaster, Horace Hainsworth
14th Sept 39
Arthur Redsell
has attended the
Central School for upwards of four
years. He is a steady hardworking
boy and has made excellent
progress. He has obtained the
Northern Universities School
Certificate, & only failed by a
very few marks in English Language to
obtain London Matriculation.
I can recommend him as
an exceptionally sound, reliable
persevering type of boy, who will
do really well.
[Signed] H. Hainsworth,
B.Sc.

This book (left) was presented to Arthur in
1936. Notice the County Borough of Derby crest imprinted on the cover
(compare the logo on the Headmaster's letterhead - left).
The Headmaster used the County Borough of
Derby seal on his letterheads (left).
It was known as The Buck in the Park. |
At some stage Joe Hawksby
redesigned the school crest as per the bookplate (right) signed by the last
Headmaster, G. B. Swaine. I still treasure Norton's Star Atlas in
which this is pasted - Ed). |

Inside front cover for a
PHILIPS' NEW SCHOOL ATLAS
By these stamps we see the
fascinating history of a book's ownership. In this particular atlas
countries coloured pink were liberally scattered all over the world.
And we used to celebrate
Empire Day! |
