Bell ringing commemoration card -
Pop Hanson

Eddie Thomas and a group of cohorts took up church bell ringing while at Central School. When they heard that "Pop" Hanson had died they got together and rang a quarter peal with the bells half muffled as a token of their respect for a great teacher. The six bell ringers are all in the 1957 Form 3X photograph. This card commemorates the event.

Brian Skeldon writes, "The words of this plaque sum up the emotions of all the Old Centaurs that I have had the pleasure to communicate with, one way or another:"

Presented by the Old Centaurs of
1944 - 1949
To commemorate the
Diamond Jubilee
of their entry to the
Derby Central School for Boys
In celebration of enduring friendships
Celer et Certus  September 2004.

The shield now resides in the Darley Park Tea Room and may be seen here.

A part of the swimming programme was to prepare boys as Life Savers. Your first goal was to get your Bronze Medallion. Then you went for your Bronze Cross.

That undressing in the water was hard!
Eddie Thomas supplied the pictures.

The School Song

G.B. Swaine's handwritten draft of
the melody of the School Song

We plan to have this fully arranged and
the music available online - Ed.

"[This] is a copy of the original that was created by the Boss, and handed to a member of the school as he was passing by the office. He does not to this day know why he finished up with it, but I for one am grateful that he passed it on. Brian Skeldon."

Brian Skeldon comments:

I came across this somewhat rare item in my archives....my own Old Centaurs Asstn. membership card. It had to be produced in order to purchase the Old Centaur Tie and Blazer Badge from Townsends in Derby. No one I have spoken to seems to recall having one....Perhaps I'm an older Centaur than I first thought!!! Or possibly the only genuine Old Centaur in town ???
