The Beginnings of The Centaur Society

This duplicated letter had been preserved by Barry Muir. Since the tear-off form at the bottom was not used - maybe his parents never joined the Centaur Society. You can read more about the Society in the School Magazines.

THE CENTAUR SOCIETY

      (PARENTS AND TEACHERS CONNECTED WITH

          DERBY CENTRAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS)

At a very enthusiastic meeting of parents and teachers, held in April, it was decided to establish the Centaur Society, with the objects of promoting the welfare of the School and supporting its activities, and at the same time developing social and other relations between parents and teachers.

A committee was appointed, and it has now met and elected its officers for the current School year, which ends on 31 August, 1945. They
are as follows:

      President: Ald. A. Sturgess, J.P. to be invited;

      Chairman:  Mr. A. Selvey;

      Secretary: Mrs. G.E. Lowes;

      Treasurer: Mr. G.B. Swaine.

      The School staff has been invited to appoint two representatives on the committee.

      A programme of activities for the Autumn Term has been planned,
with a social evening on the first Thursday in October, and talks followed by discussion on the first Thursdays in November and December. In each case the proceedings will begin at 7.30 p.m.

      You are cordially invited to join the Society, and it will be greatly appreciated if you will complete the form below, for either one parent or both, and send it, with the current year’s subscription of one shilling for each individual member, to the School, by Thursday next, 5 June, 1945, if you possibly can.

      At the same time, you may be interested in a Social, with Whist and Dancing, to be held in the hall at Abbey Street School, on Thursday, 21 June, 1945, beginning at 7.30 p.m. promptly. The charge will be 1s. 3d., including light refreshments if possible. It is very much hoped that a large number of parents and their friends will be present, and the work of the committee would be made easier if you would complete and send to School, by Thursday next, 5 June, 1945, the form below, stating how many tickets you will require. Please do not send any ticket money yet.

      The committee hope that all parents will join the Society, and that as many as possible will attend the social on June 21st, so that the members may get to know one another.
