Simple but Effective -
Boys Notified of Exam Results

August 19th, 2007

Barry Muir (1943-48) has discovered yet more priceless items from his Central School collection. The story can be inferred from the following images.

If you wanted to know your exam results during the summer vacation, back in 1948, you had to list your examinations on a sheet of writing paper. When the school was notified of the results, they would write the details on your examination list and mail it to you.

The actual results are probably in Mr. Swaine's handwriting, since the comments and initials are certainly his.

Now look carefully at the envelope.

It is dated 28 AUG 1948 - and postmarked from Whitby.

My guess is that the Boss was away camping with the Scouts at Whitby and had the examination results with him. During slack moments he was personally slogging through the donkey work of  addressing envelopes and mailing the results to his boys. That is dedication!

How different it would be today with computerized mailings.

Results were also printed in the Derby Evening Telegraph. You pored over them with pride just to see your name in print. Sure enough - there is Barry's name, half way down.

Barry comments: "I must confess that I looked hard to find myself on the DET report of events, realising in the end that I didn't get any credits - just a pass. It's only in latter years that I came to terms with this, qualifying that, out of the initial intake, it wasn't too bad."

On reflection - it was a small list.
The Boss did NOT have a lot of work to do!

You can find Barry in this form photograph
