FIRST BOYFRIEND WAS A BLOND CENTAUR

From an unnamed contributor to The Derby Evening Telegraph, July 26th, 2005.

After reading last week's article about Derby Central School (Centaurs celebrate peace with bangers and mash), one particular Old Centaur came to mind.

The year was 1942. I was 14 years old and had left school in the July of that year. My very first boyfriend attended Derby Central School. He would have been about 16 years of age, tall and blond. I was so proud to be out with him.

He was a cut above the other boys I knew because he didn't wear a school cap - he wore a straw boater with a ribbon around it in the school colours.

In all the articles about the Old Centaurs, I have not heard of anyone wearing a straw boater. I would be very interested to know why.

Our romance was short-lived. My mother was suspicious of this boy riding in circles on his bike near our house, so I had to slip 'JP' a note to say that I couldn't see him any more or I would be in trouble at home.

I loved reading about the Old Centaurs celebrating with bangers and mash. I feel that I remember Derrick Jubb as a boy. I wonder if he has a sister called Margaret? If she reads this, I would love to hear from her.

I am not putting my name to this as I do not want to embarrass any Old Centaur with the initials 'JP' who wore a straw boater.

Come on guys - own up!! - Ed.
