The teacher in "control" of the ball is 'Adge Elsey, with Harold
Simpson on the left and the teacher on the right wearing the flat cap
was Geoff Poole. (I can only think that he was acting as referee, you
wouldn't wear a hat whilst you were playing OR would you ?) Norman
Taylor was trying to intercept and Vernon Parker was the goalie,
anticipating the move OR was this to be one of their goals? (writes

Old boys from Derby Central School
were cheered by Barry Muir's recent anecdotes in Bygones. Here Ron -
or George - Cooper, of Darwin Road, Mickleover, adds to the memories.
IT was nostalgic to have my Derby
Central School days recalled by my old classmate Baz (Barry) Muir
(Physics master made the tea. Bygone. April 13). I am the one whose name
he was not quite sure about. I am Ron Cooper, but I was called George at
school, that being my first name. Elsewhere I always went by my second
name.
About 18 months ago you published a photograph and letter from the
son of Mr Simpson who taught maths and music, telling about Mr Simpson's
other interest and activities.
I remember Mr Simpson well. He played on the right wing when the
school played the annual football match against the staff on October 1,
1947. I was left back for the school and Mr Simpson sent me flying in
the first minute.
However. the school beat the staff by six goals to two.
The photograph (above) appeared in the Derby Evening Telegraph
football special on October 4, 1947.
