Unfortunate start to
my schooldays

DERBY EVENING TELEGRAPH, Tuesday, January 20, 1998
I HAVE been following with interest Bygones, especially the articles
about the Derby Central School for Boys. I was a pupil there between
1953 and 1958, when we transferred to Breadsall to become the Henry
Cavendish School, until 1960 when I left to start work.
I have many mixed feelings about school, particularly when I remember
how cold it was in winter – I never seemed to be warm.

Another thing that sticks in my memory was the first
day. New starters had to go the day before, a sort of induction day. I
arrived at the Normanton Barracks in good time and in my new uniform waiting
patiently for the School Special that went round the ring road. It never
came! There was no School Special that day.
I have many memories of the old school and some of the
new but, not knowing how much you want to hear. I have kept it short.

Since leaving, I have met only three of the
lads who were with me, two of them I have lost touch with completely and
Bob Tomlinson, who now teaches in Leicester, well, I have not been in
contact with him for a couple of years. I sometimes think it would be
nice to meet some of my old school mates. One in particular was a lad
called Tony Griffiths, who lived around the top end
of Elton
Road/ Marlborough Road way. We used to ride home together every night
after school during our fifth year but the strange thing is that we have
never met since our last day at Central. |
